Fragments in Practice

Fragments in Practice is a project with an ethnographic focus that fosters (and reflects on) the encounter between the interactive potentialities of the Book of Disquiet Digital Archive and the creative subjectivity of its readers-users. At the moment, the project includes an inspirationally heterogeneous network of collaborators: it is formed by researchers mostly linked to the field of Literature and Digital Humanities; university students, graduates and post-graduates in various fields; members of the teaching community in secondary education and also in higher education; members of the artistic community, in diverse creative domains; as well as the general audience interested in the Book of Disquiet.

Our activities started in mid-2017 and are mostly presented in the form of seminars, workshops and other public activities of educational, creative and inspirational nature. In addition to disseminating the LdoD Archive, activities have been designed to feed two complementary tracks.

The first track, defined by its educational emphasis, focuses on a guided introduction to the features of the platform. To meet this challenge, in addition to the implementation of various didactic models, a step-by-step introduction, in the form of easily accessible online video-tutorials, was produced. The recording of some of our events and didactic videos can be fully accessed on our Youtube channel, Fragmentos em Prática.

The second track, with its emphasis on playfulness and creativity, encourages the subjective exploration of the platform through its specific forms of engagement with reading, editing, and rewriting. In other words, what we propose is for readers-users to elaborate new narratives of use (both during and beyond the workshops) in which they take ownership of the interactive fragments of the Book of Disquiet in order to appropriate and resignify them.

The Fragments in Practice project has developed several individual or institutional partnerships, as is the case of the LdoD Remix Workshops, in collaboration with the Operation Room project, and also through joint international collaborations with other academic communities, such as the Agostinho da Silva Chair, at the University of Brasília, and the Graduate Program in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, at the University of Salamanca. The project also offers individual consultancy and has collected individual testimonies on the uses of the LdoD Archive.
